In Jasper, Alberta, community organisations (including the ACCA, Jasper Employment Education, and Community Futures) and a group of housekeeping workers see the disturbance COVID is creating in the tourism industry as a way to create better working conditions and professionalize the cleaning sector through worker ownership.
In February & March 2021, I provided co-operative training and education to both prospective members and institutional stakeholders and created a feasibility assessment for a housekeeping worker’s co-operative. These aimed to:
inform stakeholders on the co-operative business structure with an emphasis on worker control and management.
Assess both the development and business feasibility for a housekeeping worker’s co-op business that can provide living wages, revenue sharing and benefits, and opportunities for advancement.
Due to COVID restrictions, all the work was successfully accomplished remotely.
